@ What does a relative clause look like?

តើ​ relative clause មានលក្ខណះដូចម្ដេច?

§  This is the book which I like the most.

នេះជាសៀវភៅដែលខ្ញុំចូលចិត្តបំផុត។

        The clause “which I like the most” tells us about the book; it is a relative clause.

      អនុប្រយោគ  “which I like the most” ប្រាប់យើងអំពី សៀវភៅ។ វាជា a relative clause។

§  Mary likes the man who helped her yesterday.

ម៉ារីចូលចិត្តបុរសដែលបានជួយនាងកាលពីម្សិលមិញ។

§  She wishes to return to the place where she went to last month.

នាងចង់ត្រលប់ទៅកន្លែងដែលនាងបានទៅកាលពីខែមុន។

@ Which pronouns are used to begin the relative clause?

We use these relative pronouns to begin a relative clause.

យើងប្រើសព្វនាមទាំងនេះផ្តើម​ អនុប្រយោគគុណនាម។

§  “which” for things and animals. ប្រើជាមួយមនុស្ស និងសត្វ

§   “who or whom” for people (whom is formal)ប្រើជាមួយមនុស្ស

§  “when for times​​ ប្រើជាមួយពេល

§   why for reasons ប្រើជាមួយហេតុផល

§   where for places ប្រើជាមួយទីកន្លែង

§   whose for possessions (whom +n) ប្រើដើម្បីបញ្ជាក់កម្មសិទ្ធ

§  that for people, things or animals ប្រើជាមួយមនុស្ស សត្វ និងវត្ថុ

More examples:

  Dara doesn’t want to tell about the reason why he was absent.

ដារាមិនចង់ប្រាប់ពីហេតុដែលគាត់អវត្តមាន។

  This is the time when my son returns home from work.

នោះជាពេលដែលកូនរបស់ខ្ញុំត្រលប់ពីធ្វើការ។

  The person who (m) I trust is you.

មនុស្សដែលខ្ញុំទុកចិត្តជាអ្នក។

  That is the boy whose father died last night.

នោះជាក្មេងប្រុសដែលឳពុករបស់វាស្លាប់កាលពីយប់មិញ។

  The book that you gave to me is interesting.

សៀវភៅដែលអ្នកឪ្យមកខ្ញុំគួរឪ្យចាប់អារម្មណ៍។

        Note: The above clauses are called the defining relative clause or restrictive relative clause.

@ Why is a relative clause used?

ហេតុអ្វីយើងប្រើ a relative clause?

Look at these sentences.

1.      Dany is talking to the doctor who lives next door.

ដានីកំពុងជជែកជាមួយគ្រូពេទ្យដែលរស់នៅជិតខាងជាមួយនាង។

A.      The clause ‘who lives next door’ tells us more about the doctor, so a relative clause is used to give more information about the noun it describes.

អនុប្រយោគ  ‘who lives next door’ ប្រាប់យើងបន្ថែមពីលោកគ្រូពេទ្យ ដូច្នោះ  a relative clause ​ប្រើដើម្បីផ្តល់ពត៌មានបន្ថែមអំពីនាមដែលវាពិពណ៌នា។

B.      Another reason is that a relative clause makes a sentence more complex which is appropriate for high level learners.

ហេតុផលមួយទៀត a relative clause ធ្វើឪ្យល្បះមានលក្ខណះស្មុកស្មាញ ដែលសាកសមសម្រាប់អ្នកសិក្សាកម្រិតខ្ពស់។

Look at these two sentences:

·         John is a teacher. He teaches in grade 10.

We can combine the above two sentences into one like this

យើងអាចបញ្ចូលល្បះទាំងពីរ ជាល្បះតែមួយដូចនេះ។.

•   John is a teacher who teaches in grade 10.
